Throwback Thursday (TBT): Rigging the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera

Written by Paul Moon

Leading up to (and inspiring) the launch of this site in February 2015, there were a few viral videos that folks found useful across the Interwebs. Since these videos have never gotten their own back-to-the-future debuts at this permanent residence, let’s use Throwback Thursday (TBT) as an occasion to see what they had to say.

This one’s especially sentimental. It’s the second commentary I ever made, but up to today, here are the stats: on YouTube, 54k views and 281k minutes watched, and on Vimeo, 23.3k plays. That’s pretty big for me (maybe never again), and it got a lot of love with a couple hundred comments. (I think it even led to my gig with Paramount Pictures.) Thanks for watching it, whether before, or here for the first time.

From April 19, 2014:

Last year, when the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera arrived, I made a video to break it in, and laid down a commentary to share some insights. Not the newest thing now, it’s still the only option for capturing 10-bit 4:2:2 log video without a big rig, and costing under a grand. But it’s always needed a bit of rigging, and while filmmakers keep using it to make amazing films – examples here – there’s still a lot to talk about, in terms of rigging it right. Following up the commentary I made last year that went sort of viral, here’s a similar chat: because sometimes showing stuff, and talking over it, works better than writing an article. For a streaming clip, it does run long, but it covers lots of ground – and I’m looking forward to your comments below.

The first and main theme is that it’s wise to choose Canon EF-mount manual cine lenses, so that you can adapt them to the Micro-4/3 mount on the BMPC (and E-mount on Sony cams) with gadgets that take advantage of the conversion, enabling behind-the-lens ND filters and focal reducers. But it’s also true that typical Canon EF-mount lenses that aren’t fully manual will lack aperture control this way. Important to clarify! (There is not currently any Metabones solution specific to this need.)

Hulu Desktop: Slaughtered

Written by Paul Moon

huludesktopdiscontinued
Hulu Desktop was the one reason I always paid for Hulu Plus, to integrate with a HTPC and get a wide selection of programming without subscribing to cable or satellite. After yanking official support for this uber-basic application last year (claiming they couldn’t dedicate any more resources to it — as if something like Windows Notepad still requires a salaried department at Microsoft), in just the last few days, Hulu started playing hardball by crashing the application after a minute or so with the above “error” message. In case you forgot, Hulu is a mega-corporate venture with Comcast, NBC Universal, ABC, Disney, Fox, and massive investors. They represent the old-guard way of thinking about content delivery, and by creating this mysterious “error” instead of simply being honest about their business plan, to extort you into using specific platforms and partnerships, they’ve sunk to the lowest level of cynicism against consumers. It may not seem epic, but it’s a subtle reminder that they’re not your friend. They make perky commercials with peppy music to make you think so, but really: nyet.

Just thought I’d mention it. Exciting to see who might come along to fumigate their old-person-smell, because there’s always a hungry start-up waiting in the wings. In the meantime, watch this video for a frightening shot of irony:

New features at FocusPulling.com on its 1-month anniversary

Written by Paul Moon

We launched one month ago today, and got some great shout-outs from folks like B&H Photo and Video, Adorama and Zacuto — all places that have been valuable partners for stocking my arsenal over the years, so it meant a lot. To you, thanks so much for visiting, to give the site a whirl, sign onto its newsletter and social feeds, share your videos at the camera user groups, and check out the tips. To celebrate the 1-month anniversary of FocusPulling.com, I’ve got a few little announcements about site improvements today:

News Stream Menu Captured

NEWS STREAM
Under the BLOG fly-down menu, you’ll see this new entry called NEWS STREAM. You might have noticed, there are many more posts on a daily basis going out to the social streams, while the home page here is preserved for more occasional/focused/original content. So, it makes sense to give you a place to go for several news items per day about the art and technology of filmmaking. Hope you like it. (I’ve done the same under the DOCOFILM category.)

DEALS
Another category of frequent updates that doesn’t make it onto the home page is DEALS. Something I’ve mentioned at the ABOUT page is, I don’t promote anything for personal gain, and if something doesn’t work right, or costs too much, I always complain. In that spirit alone, I’m feeding you deal alerts from the perspective of what I’d buy for myself, on a limited budget. (Compare that to those spammy Dutch “Rumors” sites — SonyAlphaRumors, 43rumors, etc. — that basically pan-handle like a street vendor, to maximize click revenue rather than curating best savings for you.) Now, these deals are collected into one place — though on the downside, they can expire quickly, so please keep that in mind.

News and Deals Menu CaptureNEWS & DEALS FOR EACH CAMERA
Combining these two new categories, I also assume that many of you are only interested in a specific camera. That’s why I created those CAMERA USER GROUPS in the first place. Expanding on that, each category now has a NEWS & DEALS item in the fly-out menu for a frequently updated stream of news and deals specific to the camera you’re interested in.

By the way, in order to make room for these new menu items, I’ve deprecated the RIGSHOTS feature into the CAMERA USER GROUPS fly-down menu. I didn’t notice it being used much at all, but you’ve still got that standing invitation, to show off your rig!

Looking forward to more anniversaries, sharing information, and growing still more.
